On Saturday July 4th, approximately 2500 people celebrated Independence Day at Port Richey Waterfront Park where the Bayou Business Association hosted a laser light show. Many business and area residents donated their time and hard earned money to support the free, all-ages event.

The Adventure Away Shuttle transported red, white and blue clad passengers to and from the park. The talented Blue River Band entertained everyone with classic rock and blues favorites. Local radio station, Hits 106 generously advertised the event by promoting it with commercials and interviews. The patriotic themed laser show music soundtrack was played live on Hits 106.3 FM for the duration of the event. On location, the sound was produced by Encore Music. Prime Laser Systems provided the show. Families enjoyed being together to commemorate the anniversary of the most important American day in history. The United States of America became a nation when The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776.

In mid-May, Bayou Business Association members learned that the City of Port Richey didn’t budget for fireworks. A professional half hour fireworks show can cost anywhere from $15,000 to $30,000. Knowing that the city residents would expect to have some kind of Fourth of July celebration, the BBA decided to find an alternative. The BBA didn’t have much money in their budget but they found out that an hour laser show can cost up to $7000. The laser show in Waterfront Park was negotiated to cost $3500. There were $3000 in additional expenses to host the event including $450 to pay police over-time wages.

Although a fireworks display may have been more spectacular, those that were present inside the park had a wonderful time listening to patriotic music while viewing the laser lights for the hour long presentation. Folks appreciated the BBA and their benefactors for hosting the event and enjoyed a trouble-free night of family fun. The City of Port Richey staff members, police and fire departments helped make the community event run smoothly.
